The Art and Science of Metacognition

Welcome!

Metacogntion is literally “thinking about thinking” and is a term coined by John Flavell in 1979. But it is more useful to think of it as awareness of thinking and in the context of learning as the ability to plan, monitor and evaluate one’s thinking and learning.

Metacognition as an idea has been around for a long time. The Temple of Apollo at Delphi in ancient Greece had an inscription that read:

Know Thyself “

Aristotle spoke about being reflective of one’s thinking. The Socratic method is a form of metacognitive skill. But the word itself didn’t really come into use until the 1970’s. Lots of research has been done on metacognition and it is universally accepted as one of the most effective strategies that one can use to become a better learner, a better person and a better member of community.

In this new age of AI, metacognition is even more vitally important. Education can no longer be about the transferal of facts and content. Students need to come away with an ability to truly learn and understand and make connections. AI is going to change education and it is going to take jobs. Metacognition is the skill that will set you apart.

Metacognitive development is the single greatest thing you can do to improve academic achievement, athletic outcomes, and even individual and societal wellbeing!

“The unexamined life is not worth living.”

Socrates

The unexamined thought is not worth believing.
