Metacognition is literally “awareness of one’s thinking”, but can be better understood in our context as the ability to plan, monitor and evaluate one’s own thinking and learning, with the goal of improving performance and well-being. There is significant research that shows that it is one of the very best things that teachers can explicitly teach to improve student engagement, learning and achievement.
